San Francisco uses an 'S' and if no mintmark is present your coin was produced at the main mint in Philadelphia.

What was originally bright white mint luster fades as a coin circulates and is replaced with a soft silver grey hue. Naturally over time toning darkens within the design giving highlights to features and accenting details. This normal process produces a worn but still eye appealing silver dollar.

Two circulated and worn dollars are pictured, both collected and removed from circulation long ago. The top coin has less wear and exhibits greater detail but both are viewed has having above average appearance. Their 100% originality of color and toning is enhanced by the lack of nicks and dings, rim bumps or damage.

Follow along with the images and descriptions as a Morgan dollar begins to wear from freshly minted 'Uncirculated' condition, to a very worn example in 'Good' condition. By judging the different stages of wear, a 'Grade' is determined. The greater the detail remaining, the greater your 1890 Morgan silver dollar value.

Uncirculated: A silver dollar in the 'uncirculated' grade never saw use in commerce. Folds in the cap also show small amounts of rubbing with a tiny loss of roundness. Your coin still retains a pleasing sharpness in appearance.

Fine: Circulation has now reduced finer design detail to the point of merging. Clearly visible, moderate wear describes silver dollars in 'fine' condition. Liberty's hair both above and below the ear is noticeably worn with wide flat spots now replacing the original fine lines. Turning to the reverse, the leaves in the wreath are now very flat, most feathers in the eagle's neck have merged and the very tips of the eagle's wings lack any detail.

Good: Lack of design defines this old silver dollar as 'Good' condition. Liberty is mostly an outline, once a cap, hair curls and head band are now obscured. Lettering now connects to the rim in places but readable. Lack of any hair line above the forehead places this coin solidly in this lower grade. Despite excessive wear, Carson City 1890 Morgan silver dollar value is comfortably above its silver bullion price reflecting strong collector interest.
