Baccara is a Spanish disco duo that was considered the world's most successful female singing duo from 1977 to 1979. It is named after the Baccarat rose .

history

Baccara is a famous pop duo from Spain, having gained the greatest popularity in the 80s. The band's name comes from a special rose type, which also became a symbol of the duo. The band was formed in the early '70s, when two talented girls Mayte Mateus and Maria Mediolo met on tour. Future singers got the idea to create a group and perform on. In 1985 Maria Mendiola formed her own NEW BACCARA (I called it NEW BACCARA 2), which later changed their name to BACCARA. Maria was singing with Marissa Perez (Maryse Peres). They are working together with Leon Deane, mainly in Germany.

Beginnings

Mayte Mateos , born on February 7, 1951 in Logroño , and María Mendiola , born on April 4, 1952 in Madrid , met in November 1973 at the Spanish television ballet. As flamenco dancers and singers, they started their own business in Spain as the duo 'Venus' and performed on Fuerteventura , where they were discovered in January 1977 by Leon Deane, Fred Dieckmann and Patrick Kavetz (all RCA , today: Sony Music ) .

The first album Baccara was partially recorded by the German producers Rolf Soja and Frank Dostal in the Maschen recording studio and was a huge success. Peter Zentner and Tore Syvertsen were also involved. The released singles Yes Sir, I Can Boogie and Sorry, I'm a Lady became number 1 hits across Europe in 1977 and are now considered disco classics. Yes Sir, I Can Boogie was number 1 in 18 countries. In Germany, the record is one of the best-selling singles of all time.

In England, baccarat was the first Spanish group and the first female singing duo to make it to the top of the charts. 1978 and 1979 followed other successful singles such as Darling, The Devil Sent You to Lorado and Ay, Ay Sailor.

1977 performed Baccara with the title Mad in Madrid for Germany at the World Popular Song Festival in Tokyo. With the song Parlez-vous français? represented the duo Luxembourg at the Eurovision Song Contest 1978 and reached seventh place.

In the late 1970s, she made regular appearances on the French Sacha Show as well as on West and East German television in the music store , disco and Ein Kessel Buntes .

In 1979, Baccarat recorded the title Eins plus one is one, sung in German, as part of the “Year of the Child” proclaimed by UNICEF .

separation

After legal disputes, Mateos and Mendiola finally parted ways in 1982. Both initially pursued solo projects and later founded their own new singing duo one after the other.

In 1983 Mateos started as '... the voice of Baccarat' together with Marisa Pérez, a former colleague of the television ballet. Under the familiar name of Baccarat, they usually performed with a well-known repertoire. Pérez left the duo after a short time. Since then, the Spanish singer Paloma Blanco has been singing with Mayte Mateos all over the world.

On July 27, 2007, a 3-CD box with all the original Baccarat titles (for the first time on CD rarities such as Amoureux, Baila-tu, Candido and Eins plus one is one ) was released on the occasion of the 30th stage anniversary.

Original Baccarat producer Rolf Soja and copywriter Frank Dostal worked again with the original lead singer Mayte Mateos after more than 25 years. The result was the album Satin… in Black & White, which went on sale on June 27, 2008. It includes six new recordings of classics and six previously unreleased songs such as Nights in Black Satin, Simply Forget and (I Don't Want) To Lose Lautrec, along with a 'German Medley' consisting of German versions of their greatest hits: Yes Sir, I Can Boogie (But only with this song), I'm a lady and the devil sends you to Laredo.

In December 2010 a Christmas medley was published as a download. New recordings produced in the meantime have not yet been published by peer music.

In 2013 the Spanish band “Sala & the Strange Sounds” produced a current, rocking version of the world hit Yes Sir, I Can Boogie and a corresponding video with Mayte Mateos . On April 27, 2013 the song was presented in the Boogie Roller Disco 'Charada' in Madrid.

In 2016 the band “Fundacion Tony Manero feat. Baccara ”(with Mayte Mateos) Dame un Poco de Tu Amor and the group the band“ Plugin mit Baccara feat. Maria Mendiola “a new, electro-heavy version of the classic Yes Sir, I Can Boogie as a download single. In November 2016 a preview single I Belong To Your Heart was released under the name “Baccara feat. Maria Mendiola ”from the album announced for May 5, 2017. The producers were Luiz Rodriguez ( Modern Talking , CC Catch , New Baccara and Mayte Mateos ). The single was placed in Poland and Serbia, among others.
